Extra Income From Home: The Flexible, Part-Time Work That Helps Train AI

Behind every search result and chatbot answer sits a person who rated, reviewed or labelled something. We look at this new way to earn extra from home: how it works, who it suits and where the limits are.

Search results are not magic. Neither are AI answers. People taught them what good looks like.

Much of that teaching is part-time, remote, task-based work. It is done by freelancers, often in short sessions, at a laptop. For anyone weighing up extra income from home, it is one of the more concrete routes on offer.

This report looks at one of them: TELUS Digital AI Community. What the work is. How it works, step by step. Who it suits. And where the limits sit.

What this report answers

  • What do the tasks actually involve?
  • What does a person need before they can start?
  • What is stated about pay, and what is left open?

The income trend: AI needs people, and people can work from home

AI tools look automatic. They are not. Before a system can rank a search result or answer a question, someone has to show it examples of good and bad.

That someone is increasingly a remote freelancer. TELUS Digital, formerly TELUS International, runs the TELUS Digital AI Community, a network of more than one million remote contributors worldwide.

Those contributors collect, label, translate and evaluate the data used to train AI models. They also review search results and online ads for relevance and quality.

It is a new way to earn extra, built on one plain fact: machines still need human judgement. And human judgement can be exercised from a kitchen table.

Extra income and the cost of living: why more people are looking

Bills do not wait. Groceries, transport, data, rent. When the cost of living climbs, the monthly list gets harder to cover, and extra income moves up the agenda.

Cutting back only goes so far. Saving only goes so far either. A second income from home is a practical alternative to saving harder, or a way to give savings a little help.

That is the honest frame. This is not a get-rich story. It is extra income, earned one task at a time, from a laptop and a phone.

How it works: five steps from sign-up to project work

Here is the new income method in plain order. Every step happens online. Registration takes place on TELUS Digital AI Community's own site.

  1. Register on the provider's site.

You create your profile with TELUS Digital AI Community. TELUS Digital says joining is free and that it never charges applicants a fee.

  2. Pass the exam and identity verification.

The qualification exam is open-book, and guidelines and study material are provided.

  3. Find an open project.

TELUS Digital AI Community operates worldwide, but open projects vary by country and language. Each project listing states its own rate.

  4. Do the work.

Rate search results. Review online ads. Label images, text or audio. Projects are part-time and flexible, and each one sets its own hours.

  5. Get paid.

Earnings arrive through TELUS Digital's payment portal.

What the work actually looks like

Part-time. Online. Task-based. After passing the qualification exam, contributors do work like this:

Typical tasks on TELUS Digital AI Community projects

  • Rating search results for relevance and quality
  • Reviewing online ads
  • Labelling images, text or audio so AI systems can learn from them
  • Translating and evaluating data used to train AI models
  • Collecting data for AI training projects

Illustrative photograph: a laptop, a notebook and a mug on a round table. Project guidelines do the explaining.

Guidelines define what good looks like. The task is to apply them with care, again and again. Attention to detail is the skill, which is why the qualification exam comes before any paid work.

Who it suits

Detail-oriented people. A computer, a smartphone and reliable internet. A wish for flexible, part-time freelance work from home. That is the profile.

Many roles need no previous professional experience. Applicants pass an open-book qualification exam, and guidelines and study material are provided. Typical requirements are a computer, a smartphone and a reliable broadband connection.

What you need to get started

  • A personal computer and a smartphone
  • Daily broadband access
  • A pass in the project qualification exam
  • Identity verification

How pay works

Pay depends on the project and the country. Each project listing states its own rate, so no single figure applies across the board.

Earnings are paid through TELUS Digital's payment portal to a bank account or PayPal where available.

Where the limits are

Every route has edges. These are the ones for this kind of work.

  • It is freelance contractor work on TELUS Digital AI Community's projects, not employment. Each project sets its own requirements and hours.
  • Most projects require a qualification exam and identity verification before any paid work.
  • Open projects depend on country, language and current demand.

For a detail-minded person with a laptop and a spare evening, that may be a fair trade for flexibility. For others, the exam and the project list will settle the question quickly.

The next step is on TELUS Digital AI Community's own site

Everything from here happens with the provider. The open projects, the exam, the requirements and the rates are published on its own site, and that is where registration takes place.
